On September 6th there are two great events. The first is the 4th annual Potters Market Invitational at the Mint Museum in Charlotte. This is a great show with great potters. All of NC's best will be there including my former boss man Matt Jones and his new apprentice Alex Haworth. More information on the event can be found here.

Daniel Johnston will be having an opening on the same date at the Crimson Laurel Gallery in Bakersville NC. Daniel was one of Mark Hewitt's apprentices who afterwards spent some time in Thailand learning how to turn very large pots utilizing a completely different method of construction. His forms are very strong and his surfaces very fluid with the help of a really nice ash glaze and 200 lbs of salt. I got to help him fire his kiln down near Seagrove a few weeks ago and it was a blast. If you can't make it up to the gallery in person all the pots will be cataloged and listed online the day the show opens.

Hi Alex-I have a question about an earlier post. You said you are mixing your clay in 55 gallon drums-what is the total poundage of dry material that would go into that size batch assuming you are filling to the 3/4 mark with water? Thanks.
Deborah...I can't give you a straight answer on that. When I worked at Matt's I was putting about 4 buckets of raw clay, sometimes it was quite wet and sometimes it was drier. I also put in about half a bag of silica (25 lbs) and a bag of gold art per batch (50 lbs) plus (just estimating here) 35 lbs a bucket so that is 140 lbs of blue pipe clay. It could have been more like 40 per bucket but I'm not sure. Let me know if you have more questions. Are you scheming up in those woods? I used to work for the AMC on the construction crew up at Pinkham Notch. Northern NH is one of my favorite places in the world. Id love to hear some time what kind of markets you are selling your work in and just what it is like to be a potter up there....
I'm going to start making my own clay and trying to figure things out. I think I'll probably just mix up a bunch of dry in a trash can and add it to the water till it's as sloppy as I want.
I've always been so amazed with the AMC crews. Not only are they hiking the trails, but with tools and backpacks with like 100 lbs. of food and whatnot to restock a lodge etc. Did you live here or were you just here to work for a while?
I'm just getting started marketing my work. I was recently accepted in the League so that will help a lot. I need to join the NH Potters Guild, try to get into the community of potters around here. Thanks a lot for your help, and happy to talk more anytime.
